Ziemer Academy in Moscow
The Ziemer Academy in Moscow packed a lot of cutting edge information and educational tips from the leading experts around the world. Ziemer is a leading company in surgical and diagnostic eye care. The focus of the academy was femtosecond laser in cataract and corneal transplantation surgery. Dr. Shady Awwad gave a talk about how to use the unique intraoperative built-in OCT of the state-of-the-art Ziemer LDV Z8 platform to optimize intracorneal ring segments implantation in patients with keratoconus. Professor Boris Malyugin from Russia performed live surgeries and gave several talks about using the LDV Z8 femtosecond laser in performing cataract surgery in very difficult eyes. Professor Jod Mehta from Singapore explained the concepts of femtosecond lasers and different unique and innovative applications in a series of talks. Professor Rupert Menapace from Austria showed how to enhance the workflow with the LDV Z8 femtosecond laser in cataract surgery in a very busy surgical center in addition to other very helpful topics.

Intraocular Implant & Refractive Surgery 2017, Chennai, India
Dr. Awwad participated in the Intraocular Implant & Refractive Surgery meeting held in Chennai, India, in July 2017. He gave two talks about corneal inlays for the treatment of presbyopia and corneal ring segments for the treatment of keratoconus. He also received the IIRS gold medal from the minister of health of Tamil Nadu, Madras, India, on the behalf of the IIRS and its organizers. The conference featured the latest innovations in cataract and refractive surgery.

Dr. Awwad will be attending the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Copenhagen, Denmark in September 2016. He will also be presenting on a new technique using intrastromal corneal ring segments to correct Keratoconus and another talk about customized laser surgery. Dr. Awwad is co-presenting in a course in the scientific program about meibomian gland dystrophy and blepharitis.
Advanced Surgical Course in endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) at the Netherland Institute of Innovative Ophthalmic Surgery (NIIOS)

Dr. Awwad completed an advanced surgical course on endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK surgery) with Dr. Gerrit Melles and his team in Rotterdam. Dr. Melles has been credited with more than 6 radical innovations in the field of corneal surgery and transplantation over the past two decades.

Dr. Awwad presented in the STAAR ICL symposium about why he choses to ICL, a collamer lens to correct myopia and astigmatism, when appropriate, for his patients. He also presented about the new and novel Smartpluse technology in excimer laser treatments to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, and about hyperopic LASIK, femtosecond laser versus mechanical technology. Dr. Awwad co-presented in a course in the scientific program about meibomian gland dystrophy and blepharitis.
